Bio/Research

Ettinger specializes in International Relations and US foreign policy. His research focuses on continuity and change in US foreign policy in the post-Cold War era and its implications for world order. His current SSHRC IDG funded project explores Canada-US relations during the Trump presidency. Recent published work covers a range of issues including US and Canadian foreign policy, and International Relations pedagogy. His research appears in International Studies Review, International Studies Perspectives, Security Dialogue, Millennium, International Journal, Canadian Foreign Policy Journal, Politics, Comparative Strategy, and Cambridge Review of International Affairs.

In the classroom, his teaching programme embraces the “Global IR” agenda and its push for greater disciplinary inclusiveness and intellectual diversity. He teaches classes on a wide range of topis in world politics, including a popular first-year course on “world order in an age of crisis.” In 2021, he was awarded the Canadian Political Science Association Prize for Teaching Excellence.

Before joining the Department of Political Science at Carleton, he taught at the University of Waterloo, Dalhousie University, and Queen’s University
