After completing his MSW at Wilfred Laurier University, Mellway began his career at the Ontario March of Dimes as a Community Development Officer and was promoted to Regional Director. In 1980, he became Executive Director of the Canadian Wheelchair Sports Association and after 10 years, joined tCarleton to open the Paul Menton Centre for Students with Disabilities.
Mellway was a founder and former Director of Carleton’s READ Initiative (Research, Education, Accessibility and Design), now the Carleton University Accessibility Institute. He is now Accessibility Advisor to the Accessibility Institute and to Facilities Management and Planning. In addition, Mellway has been certified by the Rick Hansen Foundation Certification Program (RHFAC ) as a designated RHFAC Professional and is a key player in the current RHFAC audit of the Carleton campus to ensure we are working towards a fully accessible built environment.
Mellway was a competitive athlete representing Canada with medal performances in Paralympics and World Championships in over three decades highlighted by a Gold medal in the 1976 Olympiad, a Bronze Medal in the 1994 Winter Paralympics in Lillehammer and a Silver Medal from the 1998 Winter Paralympics in Nagano. He competed internationally in snooker, wheelchair basketball, wheelchair tennis and paralympic hockey.
Mellway has also enjoyed a long career in various volunteer capacities serving persons with disabilities. He recently completed a three year term on the Province of Ontario Accessibility Standards Advisory Committee/Standards Development Committee and is currently a member of Canada Post’s Accessibility Advisory Board.
