Cairns is an interdisciplinary scholar and teacher committed to advancing social and environmental justice. She teaches in Childhood and Youth Studies at Carleton and is the managing editor of the Journal of Critical Race Inquiry.
From 2014-2024, Cairns was a faculty member in the Department of Childhood Studies at Rutgers University.
Cairns is the coauthor of Food and Femininity (Bloomsbury 2015) and Introducing Sociology Using the Stuff of Everyday Life (Routledge 2017).
